Signal Private Messenger is a free social and communication mobile app that allows you to securely chat and call with others. Developed by Signal Foundation, this app is a cross-platform centralized encrypted messaging service that uses the internet to send one-to-one and group messages. This includes media such as files, images, videos, and even voice notes. This tool is also available as a web app for desktop users.
Is Signal Private Messenger safe?
Similar to WhatsApp and Telegram, Signal Private Messenger is a mobile communication app that lets you send SMS messages, voice calls, and video calls to your contacts and strangers. How does Signal Private Messenger work?
As soon as you launch the app, you’ll be greeted by the Terms & Privacy Policy agreement. Here, you can immediately restore a backup and old account if you have any. It will prompt you to enable access to your contacts list—although you can skip this for later. Next, you will have to verify your phone number by inputting it and sending back the verification code you’ll receive. This process automatically registers your code so you don’t have to manually type it.
You then have to set up your profile with a mandatory first name and create your own four-digit PIN. This is for your saved data and you won’t need it to open the app—however, you can’t recover this so it’s best to enable PIN reminders to not forget. The main menu of the app is a user-friendly interface. It mostly displays your recent chats, with two buttons at the bottom-right corner for creating them and accessing your camera.
The top-left corner has your profile and settings—which can also be accessed via the drop-down menu on the top-right corner. Among the options in there are New Group, Mark All Read, and Invite Friends. Next to the drop-down menu is the search function. In the settings menu, you can configure various advanced aspects—such as the privacy locks, read receipts, linked devices, media auto-download, and data storage. You can also change the app’s appearance and even enable Dark Mode.

All in all, Signal Private Messenger is a great alternative to other messaging mobile apps, as it’s easy to use but still offers advanced settings. Its main issue lies in the overall quality of video calls but in terms of SMS, it’s highly convenient and makes for a competitive rival against the likes of Telegram, Whatsapp, and Messenger.
